Frequently Asked Questions
While it is important that we comply with the FMCSA ELDT requirement and exceed state requirements, the principle focus of all our courses is to instill a safety culture into the drivers by persuading them to remove or reduce risk in everything they do.
The Driver Training Course does comply with the FMCSA ELDT requirements. Included in the classroom trainers guide are seven pages that detail the 246 subject ELDT requirements and then show where this training is provided in the Driver Training Course. This can be used to share with FMCSA, should you ever be audited
A Safety Management System (known as a SMS) is a process whereby you identify the hazards in the operations, analyze these hazards and then devise the reciprocal behaviors to remove reduce these hazards. When we reduce or remove the hazards, we reduce or remove the risks. The School Bus Driver Training Course identifies 22 potential hazards in operating a school bus and the whole course is built around persuading drivers to avoid or reduce the risks that come from the hazards.
Focusing on removing or reducing the risks from the 22 hazards identified, makes understanding the desired behaviors easy to understand, easy to teach and easy to enforce.
The process to become a school bus driver is as follows:
- Apply for the job at a school district or contractor
- Study to take the CDL Written Test exam. Exam is taken at DMV center (Department of Motor Vehicles). You are required to score at least 80% in each subject. There are four subjects: General Knowledge, Passenger Endorsement, School Bus Endorsement, Air Brakes Endorsement
- When you pass the CDL Written Test, you will obtain your Commercial Learners Permit (CLP).
- The location will then check your credentials – Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, Criminal Record Check (CRC), Drug Test, Physical, and References.
- Assuming all the credentials are satisfactory, as a trainee, you now go through 27 training programs in the classroom or online, as required by FMCSA under their Entry Level Driver Training requirements. Once completed, you take another written exam and are required to score at least 80%.
- At the same time you are going through the classroom training, you are also receiving at least 15 hours of Behind-The-Wheel training (BTW). BTW training will be provided until you are able to pass the BTW test.
THE BTW test is taken at the DMV, and if passed you will receive your class B CDL license
